Duma of Ivan Mazepa or History That Warns
Duma "All sincerely seek peace" is an original work of Ivan Mazepa of the 17th century, in which he reflects on the fate of Ukraine, calling for unity among the Cossack elders.
This work is considered a political poem in which Mazepa expresses his vision of contemporary political and social problems. In particular, the thought concerns the issue of the fragmentation of the Cossack society and the lack of agreement among various political groups, which leads to the weakening of the Hetmanship.
The poem begins with Mazepa's observation of the people's desire for peace, but indicates that this peace is impossible due to internal discord and lack of unity.
The author compares Ukraine to a ship, where only one steersman can steer the ship, as well as to a beehive, where all bees listen to their queen. He warns against the danger of internal struggle, because, as the author notes, it is precisely because of disagreement that Ukrainians lose their strength and independence.
Mazepa pays special attention to how Ukrainians are divided into different political groups that serve other states: Lyakh (Poland), Moscow, Turkey. This discord and dependence on foreign forces weakens Ukraine, which leads to the loss of its unity and strength. The author emphasizes that under such conditions it is difficult to defend one's rights and freedoms.
The speech ends with a call for unity: Hetman Ivan Mazepa appeals to the Cossack foremen, colonels and generals with a request to stop internal quarrels, unite and fight for freedom and honor.
He emphasizes the importance of protecting "rights through sabres", stressing that only through struggle can independence be preserved and the glory of the people restored.
